Ever want to know more about the wonderful quartet from Germany? Look no further, here’s a bio written especially for the site based on information found from various sources across the web.
The band originally formed in Magdeburg, Germany and consist of Bill Kaulitz (vocals), his twin brother Tom Kaulitz (guitar), Georg Listing (bass) and Gustav Schäfer (drums). Today they are claiming the hearts of girls (and boys) all over the world.
Devilish
Under the guidance of their stepfather Gordon, the boys began writing and composing songs at a very early age as a Duet with Tom on guitar and Bill of course on vocals as well as keyboard. Performing at some local clubs they soon met their bassist Georg and drummer Gustav and formed a band with the initial name of Devilish.
The year 2003 marked the beginning for the four when bill participated n the German version of Star Search and won second place and more importantly, it caught the eye of the record industry. They got discovered by music producer Peter Hoffman who put together the team of producers, including David Jost and Pat Benzner who are still with them to this day. As Devilish they signed with Sony BMG after recording their demo cd. However, sadly they were released soon after.
Schrei and Zimmer 483
As you may have guessed that wasn’t the end for the band! They began working on a new album under the name of Tokio Hotel and released Schrei, which was their first official record. In 2005, Universal Music Group signed the band and began coming up with a marketing strategy for them. Durch den Monsun, their single, quickly climbed the charts and skyrocketed to #1 on August 26th, 2005. The once unknown band became a overnight sensation and is now called the biggest act to come out of Germany in twenty years.
New singles followed which included remixes and variations of older songs. The world seemed to be moving faster then one would expect, but the boys seemed to enjoy every moment of the success, maintaining their down to earth attitude towards things and remaining grateful to the fans. Their second album, Zimmer 483 was released on February 23rd, 2007 and didn’t disappoint. It became as popular as Schrei.
Scream
Soon after with two Euro tours and their new album released, they went back into the studio and started translating their previous songs to English. What does this mean? Yes, the United Kingdom was released with the grace of Scream, the fourth installment to the era of Tokio Hotel. The first English concert for Tokio Hotel happened June 19th, 2007 and they were successful in winning the hearts of girls even in the UK.
Tokio Hotel never let anything slip by, especially if it was a oppurtunity to explore something (and somewhere) new they took on the North American scene and entered the US market in late 2007. Playing a small handful of sold out shows in Canada and the US, they gained the attention of girls across the seas. The band shortly after returned to Europe to start their third tour, the 1000 Hotels tour. The tour however was halted half way in Lisbon, Portugal due to health concerns over Bill Kaulitz. Bill suffered vocal fatigue and underwent surgery to remove a cyst that had formed on his vocal cords.
Despite this, fans remained loyal. Many putting their thoughts and prayers into sending get well wishes and hoping for the best for Bill, praying that nothing damaged his vocal cords too much. The band later rescheduled their dates and made two other small tours in America. Afterwards they started the process for their third album to be released on October 6, 2009.
Humanoid
2008-2009 has not been an easy road for the band. Hard at work in the studio for most of it writing and recording. That wasn’t the biggest issue that they had to deal with however. Tom and Bill both became victims of a stalking group consisting of girls known as “The Afghans”, who wore scarvesor bandanas over their faces. At a gas station, one of the girls approached Tom and Tom did in fact assault the girl. Poor Gustav was assaulted at a bar that he was in enjoying himself. The past two years haven’t been all to kind to the band members. However through it all, the fans remain loyal and respectful (if you don’t include the ‘stalkers’), well, fans have been as patient as they can be while waiting for the new album to be released.
Humanoid, the new album for the band will be released October 6, 2009 in both Europe and The USA, the songs reflecting exactly on the same for both albums (to our knowledge thus far). The bands first single for the album, called Automatisch/Automatic will be released on September 16, 2009. However, many fans that listen to Cherry Tree Radio have heard the complete and full versions of the songs as a treat. Both sound amazing. There have been issues recently of leaked songs, but Cherry Tree tweeted on their Twitter account that these are not the actual versions. They are rough copies of them and are looking into how they are getting leaked.
2009 marks a year of change for the boys. Both musically and physcially. Bill has tamed his infamous “lions man” (or porcupine as Holly called it) in favor of white dreads (or braids) that are weaved into his hair. Tom has dropped his dreads for braids…as well as dyed his hair black. Gustav has taken back to his glasses and Georg’s hair is longer. The boys have changed and fans have had mixed reactions, however still seem to remain devoted to the German boys.
